Review

Needing a hideaway?
Keiskama B&B a perfect base for visitors to Port Elizabeth

While most visitors to Port Elizabeth would want to stay in a hotel on the beachfront, the Friendly City’s famous coastline is only long enough to host a few establishments. If I were to be honest, the expectation of sights and sounds of the ocean is often diluted by cars with booming sound systems, indicator-less taxis and crowds everywhere – everything you don’t want when hoping to truly unwind and relax.

Located a few minutes’ drive from the city’s beachfront and other attractions, Keiskama B&B is surprisingly a world removed from everyday Port Elizabeth and is a perfect base for a great weekend getaway thanks to its location in a quiet neighbourhood in the upmarket suburb of Summerstrand.

With the afternoon traffic negotiated, I soon arrived at this 4-Star establishment where I was greeted by owner Charmaine McCance, who also escorted me to one of the five suites.

Sporting a Thai theme – the others being Indian, Oxford, Beach and Manhattan, I immediately took a liking to the king-sized bed and character of my suite, which also boasted a flat screen television with a DSTV decoder for an array of channels, a roof-mounted fan and air-conditioning, microwave, full set of cutlery and crockery, mini fridge and complimentary Wi-Fi.

After unpacking, I was keen to find out if all those positive reviews on Trip Advisor were true and was given a tour of the place by one of their staff. My tour certainly confirmed how their suites, which were tidy and neat, have a simple yet stylish feel. Additional amenities on offer include a swimming pool, a braai area and secured parking on-site.

My tour done and a nice hot shower a few hours later, I set about doing some work on my laptop but could not resist the comfy soft bed and decided to call it a night.

Next morning, and having almost overslept, I headed over the dining area where I dug into their hearty a la carte breakfast of scrambled eggs, slices of toast, bacon, hashbrowns and a cup of Rooibos – just what I needed to start my day. Guests should also note that dinners are available only on request.

Short but nonetheless sweet, my stay at Keiskama B&B was proof that an ocean side view shouldn’t be the deciding factor when choosing your next accommodation in PE. As a tip, if you are planning to stay longer, ask them about their special rates!
